Today, Apple & Google keeps a portion for any subscription fees an app offers and is collected through their platforms. Elon Musk slams them over the cost, which equates to 30% for Apple and 15% for Google.

App Store is like 30 Percent Tax says Elon Musk

Musk recently referred to Apple’s app store fees as a “tax on the internet” and stated in a recent tweet that they are “clearly too expensive due to the iOS/Android duopoly.”

An alternative option Musk could take to keep Apple or Google getting a cut would be similar to the way Spotify does it, asking Twitter users to sign up for Blue via a website instead.

However, content filtering is more likely to be the issue that leads to a conflict between these companies.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, and Elon Musk could engage in verbal combat, and Apple might ban Twitter from the App Store as a result.

Apple has a history of removing apps that don’t adhere to its content policies without hesitation.

In the example of Parler, a social app favored by the right, was quickly taken down following the unrest at the U.S. Capitol.

After the app tightened its moderation guidelines and disallowed some posts for the Apple version, Apple allowed Parler back to the App Store after a few months of reconsideration.

While we don’t know yet if Twitter is at risk of being removed by Apple and Google, we do know that Apple’s App Store Director just voluntarily deactivated his personal Twitter account.
